Description
My Karp is quintessential Riesling, displaying the majesty and zip of this great grape. It’s just off-dry with intense citrus and apricot fruit and a steely freshness. A beautifully balanced, fresh white from this 5-Star, 17th century estate.
The Karp-Schreiber estate, family owned since 1664, lies in the heart of the Mosel. This important region starts southwest of the ancient city of Trier and follows the Mosel river through the Rhineland to Koblenz where the Mosel joins the Rhine. Dramatic, slate covered slopes are the key to the Mosel’s wine quality. Estate manager Alwin Karp and winemaker son Jobst Julius have 6 hectares of Riesling, cultivated on these steep slopes, even including a patch of Grand Cru Juffer Sonnenuhr vines. The vineyards being far too precarious for machinery, hand tending is their only option. The off-dry My Karp from the very good 2019 vintage is a Mosel classic – fruity, delicate and steely fresh. It’s the ideal apéritif or partner to light dishes.
The winery says “An ecological approach in no way rules out the use of state-of-the-art technology. Since Merlin and Elias – our two donkeys – refuse to work in the vineyard, we make careful and effective use of a rotary hoe. We also use durable patina poles made of corten steel to prevent contamination with zinc. Our grape pressing process is gentle and we practice cool fermentation in stainless steel. This produces fruity and fresh wines, and, after a period of maturing in a traditional “Fuderfass” oak barrel (which holds 1000 litres) our authentic expressive single-vineyard wines which impress with their individual character.”
