Crafted by California Syrah pioneer Pax Mahle, "The Hermit" is a brilliant homage to the classic, savory expressions of the Northern Rhône. Blind tasters frequently mistake its gamey, olive-tinged complexity for top-tier French Cornas or Hermitage. It pours a dense, deep ruby-purple color with an inky core. The nose explodes with a complex bouquet of black cherries, dark cassis, and bittersweet chocolate, intricately layered with blood iron, green peppercorns, and cured black olives. On the palate, it balances incredible structural power with a lifted, energetic agility. A concentrated, fleshy core of dark forest fruits runs over silky-smooth, well-integrated tannins, balanced perfectly by a fresh vein of acidity before settling into a long, savory finish accented by wood smoke and crushed stones. Note: Because it was bottled unfiltered, it will throw a natural sediment; decanting is highly recommended. 14% ABV
